The Best Kept Winter Skincare Tips

by Haya Issa |

As the seasons change, we always make sure to update our wardrobes with the latest trends and fashion crazes. So why should our beauty routines be any different? We tend to forget that the cold, winter climes can be damaging to our skin and therefore, we need to make sure we 'winterize' our skincare regimen to ensure flawless skin year round.

We've gathered the top tips and tricks to prepare your skin for the winter season.

#1 Dry skin
Icy weather may leave your skin feeling dry and dull in the winter. To avoid this, dermatologists suggest using a humidifier to add moisture in the air and keep your skin glowing. Also, as simple as this sounds, try adding a glass or two of water to your day. When it comes to skincare products, swap your face wash for a cleansing oil.

#2 Chapped lips
No one wants that flaky, cracked lip look! For DIY lovers, try mixing brown sugar with coconut oil for an easy, at home lip exfoliant. If do-it-yourself isn't really your forte, invest in a nourishing lip scrub (we recommend Burt's Bees Conditioning Lip Scrub).

#3 Avoid scorching hot water
As comforting as a hot shower on a cold day sounds, washing your face, hands, hair or body with hot water during the winter season will strip your skin from the essential oils that keep it moisturized. This leads to cracked skin (and flaky scalps). A simple trick is to dry right after your shower or bath and moisturize before leaving the bathroom. This ensure your skin doesn't lose water and remains hydrated.

#4 Hydrate from the inside out
As they say, "you are what you eat", so switch up your diet for an irreplaceable glow that even moisturizers can't give you. Try fruits and veggies including watermelons, cucumbers, avocados, tomatoes and cantaloupes. Load up on vitamins and omega-3 rich foods, and avoid caffeine and alcohol which cause dehydration.

Of course, we can't forget the basics; i.e. moisturizing daily, removing your makeup before bed, and wearing protective sun cream on sunny days. Find what works for you, build a daily skincare regime and stick to it and you'll never have dull skin again!
